About the Host Site

Riverside County, located in Southern California, operates as a large and diverse regional government responsible for serving over 2.4 million residents across 7,300 square miles. Governed by a Board of Supervisors and managed by the County Executive Office, it oversees a wide range of services and infrastructure across urban centers, rural communities, and unincorporated areas. The county’s operations span public safety, public works, health care, human services, land use, and environmental management. Through departments such as the Sheriff’s Office, Public Health, Human Services, and Transportation, the county provides law enforcement, emergency response, welfare programs, and infrastructure maintenance. It also manages specialized service areas (CSAs) that handle local amenities such as parks, landscaping, and water systems, ensuring tailored services for different communities.

A major operational focus of the County of Riverside is coordination and resilience. The county’s Emergency Operations Plan outlines a “whole community” approach that integrates city governments, tribal authorities, and regional agencies to prepare for and respond to all types of disasters. Financial and administrative functions, managed by the Auditor-Controller and Executive Office, ensure accountability, payroll, property tax administration, and strategic direction for countywide operations. Given its size and diversity—from dense western cities to remote desert regions—the county faces the ongoing challenge of balancing urban development, rural service delivery, and environmental preservation. Overall, Riverside County functions as a complex, mission-driven organization dedicated to efficient governance, public safety, and the well-being of its residents.
