Tres Rios 4 (TR4) facility located in Cuautitlan near Mexico City, is one of Panalpina’s largest facilities in the Americas’ region. With 30,000 sqm, TR4 offers warehousing, distribution, last mile delivery and value added services. The facility, which has been operating since 2007, employs over 250 people and is operational all 365 days with 3 shifts and a special service for spare part urgencies. The customer portfolio includes high-tech, telecom and retail amongst others. Overall TR4 provides service to 13 customers.
The facility started the deployment of LogEx with a focus on creating a lean culture amongst their employees. The facility was first certified with Bronze after six months proving to have all the basics in place and a stable work environment. Just a year later, the site was already showing signs of an improvement culture on the shop floor; the different accounts and employees were engaged and contributing to the results of the facility.
Panalpina wanted to created a Lean Program for everyone that could contribute to the company’s profitable growth . We supported them to develop their Benchmarking Assessment Framework; Roadmapping and then the creation and deployment of accredited Lean training .
All of that lead to the achievement of the Silver certificate. Their CI journey did not end there becoming the first facility in Panalpina to earn a Gold award after showing proof of sustainability of a coaching culture and partnership with their primary customers.
The local team created a process to capture, filter and implement the best improvement ideas. Over the last 3 years, the team has recorded over 200 initiatives that add up to over 2 million CHF in savings.

Employee engagement significantly improved and the team successfully deployed the full logistics Training Academy and Cardiff University Lean Competency System Certification program to ensure the quality and sustainability of the program.
The site went on to receive a Bronze Medallion Shingo Award for Operational Excellence. Panalpina were the first logistics company in the world to receive such recognition.
The Shingo Prize focuses on behaviours and systems and is regarded as the world’s most prestigious manufactuirng award.
